Backpacker Travel Insurance for Australian Travellers
Big trip, small budget, plans that change as you go? Go Insurance provides backpacker travel insurance for Australian travellers — flexible Australian travel insurance from goinsurance.com.au, with comprehensive, budget and student options you tailor during your quote. Build the cover around the trip you’re actually taking, not the one a package policy assumes.
Cover is subject to the PDS, including its limits, conditions and exclusions. When you quote, select every region or country your route touches — including the ones you’re only passing through.
Backpacker Cover at a Glance
Months Away, Dozens of Borders, and No Medicare Card in Sight
Backpacking is the kind of travel that rearranges you. You could walk into the Himalayas for the most spectacular mountain country on earth, or head to South America for the Inca Trail through Peru, the Death Road in Bolivia and Cristo Redentor above Rio. You could pick up an interrail pass and stitch together central Europe a city at a time, or fly north to Asia and island-hop between Ko Samui and Ko Pha-ngan before working your way overland through Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. Wherever the route takes you, the memories and the people you meet along the way tend to outlast the trip by decades.
What makes backpacking brilliant is also what makes it exposed. Long trips mean more border crossings, more overnight buses and ferries, more hired scooters, and every possession you own sitting in a dorm room or strapped to your back. Medicare stops the moment you leave Australia, hospitals in most of the world expect payment or a guarantee before treatment, and a medical evacuation from a remote region can cost many times the price of the whole trip. Go Insurance builds cover around the parts that actually matter on the road: overseas medical expenses, evacuation and repatriation, your gear, and a 24/7 emergency assistance team you can reach from anywhere.
What Your Backpacker Cover Can Include
A Go Insurance policy can provide benefits across the events that most often derail a long trip, subject to the limits, conditions and exclusions in the PDS.
Build Cover That Fits a Backpacker Budget
Go Insurance lets you choose exactly what’s covered, so you’re not paying for protection your trip doesn’t need.
You can also remove whole modules you’re confident you won’t need — Cancellation & Curtailment, Property, Disruption or Legal — which lowers your premium, and adjust your excess when you buy. Overseas Medical Expenses, Personal Liability and COVID-19 cover are always included and can’t be removed.
Long Trips, Loose Plans and Lots of Countries
Backpacking routes rarely sit inside one neat region. Go Insurance lets you select Worldwide, or pick the specific regions and countries you’ll actually visit — and for a route that only touches two or three places, selecting them individually can work out a better premium than the whole region. Whichever you choose, make sure every country you’ll set foot in is inside your selection, including short overland stops and stopovers on the way.
Plans change on the road, and that’s fine — but your policy dates don’t move on their own. If you decide to stay longer, contact us before your policy expires and we may be able to extend it; once cover has lapsed we generally can’t. Worth setting a reminder on your phone for a couple of weeks out from your end date.
Our Annual Multi-Trip policy is built for frequent short trips rather than one long journey — each trip is covered for up to 31 days, extendable to 50 or 60 when you buy — so for a single extended trip, a single-trip policy is usually the right fit. If your travel dates run beyond what the quote engine will accept, or you’re over 75, give the team a call and we’ll talk through the options.
Dorm Rooms, Night Buses and Everything You’re Carrying
A backpacker’s whole life fits in one bag, which is exactly why theft claims are so common. Under the PDS, belongings are treated as “unattended” if you leave them with someone you didn’t know before the trip, put them somewhere they could be taken without you noticing, or move far enough away that you couldn’t stop someone taking them — a bag left on the beach while you swim, or in a hostel common room while you step out. Items left unattended in a public place, an unattended vehicle or a tent are covered only up to a limited amount, so use the locker, use the safe, and keep valuables on you.
Per-item sub-limits apply as well as an overall luggage limit, with higher limits for electronics like cameras and laptops. Keep proof of purchase — without it, claims are capped at a much lower amount — and for any electronic item or valuable above the PDS threshold you’ll need a police report within 24 hours plus proof of ownership. High-value items checked into the luggage hold aren’t covered, so your camera and laptop travel in your daypack.
All of this sits inside the Property module. If you remove Property cover to save on premium, there’s no cover for lost, stolen or damaged belongings at all — a fair trade for some travellers, but make it a deliberate choice rather than an accident.

Things to Know Before You Travel
Like all travel insurance, backpacker cover has limits, conditions and exclusions. The ones that catch travellers out most often:

Backpacker Travel Insurance — Frequently Asked Questions
Everything Australian travellers commonly ask about insuring a long, multi-country backpacking trip.
Does Go Insurance cover backpacking trips?
Yes. Go Insurance is leisure travel insurance for Australian travellers, and a backpacking trip is simply a longer, more mobile version of that. You choose your travel dates, select the regions or countries on your route, pick comprehensive, budget or student cover, and tailor the modules you keep. Cover is available to permanent Australian residents and to people who have lived in Australia for at least the past three months, online for travellers up to age 75 at the time of travel.
Can I extend my policy if I decide to stay overseas longer?
In many cases, yes — but you must contact us before your current policy expires. Extensions are subject to eligibility and approval, and once a policy has lapsed we generally can’t extend it, which means buying fresh cover if you’re eligible at all. Set a calendar reminder a couple of weeks before your end date. Note that our Annual Multi-Trip policy isn’t the answer for one long trip: it covers each individual trip for up to 31 days, extendable to 50 or 60 days when you buy.
Can I get travel insurance if I’m already overseas?
Yes, in many cases. Go Insurance offers already-overseas cover for eligible travellers who are already on the road when they buy. A waiting period and other eligibility requirements apply, the cooling-off period may not apply, and you’ll need a confirmed return ticket to Australia. If you’ve realised mid-trip that you’re uninsured, contact our team and we’ll explain your options.
Which region do I select if I’m backpacking through several countries?
Select Worldwide if your route crosses multiple continents, or choose the specific regions and countries you’ll visit if the trip is more contained. Selecting individual countries rather than a whole region can work out a better premium when you’re only visiting two or three, so it’s worth comparing both in the quote engine. The important part is that every country you’ll set foot in is inside your selection — including overland border hops and long stopovers.
Is my phone, camera or laptop covered in a hostel dorm?
They can be, under the Property module, but the conditions matter. Belongings left “unattended” in a public place — including a hostel common room, a bag on the beach, or an unattended vehicle or tent — are covered only up to a limited amount, so use lockers and safes. Per-item sub-limits apply, keep proof of purchase or your claim is capped at a much lower amount, and for electronics and valuables above the PDS threshold you’ll need a police report within 24 hours. High-value items checked into the luggage hold aren’t covered at all.
Am I covered for hiking, trekking and adventure activities?
Many are automatically covered with no add-on to buy — but each activity has its own conditions. Self-guided trekking and hiking is covered on established or mapped routes up to a maximum height of 2,500m, rising to 4,000m when you’re with a licensed commercial operator, and some activities require a licensed operator or have participation limits. Snow sports need the Snow Sports extension added during your quote. Check your planned activities on our sports and leisure cover page before you go.
Am I covered to ride a scooter or motorbike overseas?
Only if you meet the conditions in the PDS. You must wear a helmet at all times regardless of local law, wear enclosed footwear and clothing with reasonable skin coverage, hold the right current Australian licence (a motorcycle licence for motorcycles up to 250cc, or a driver’s licence for scooters and mopeds up to 200cc), and hold a valid licence for the country you’re riding in. Passengers must wear a helmet too, with a driver who meets all of these requirements. Scooter accidents are among the most common and most expensive claims Australian backpackers face in South East Asia, so sort your licences before you leave.
Am I covered if I’m working overseas or travelling on a working holiday visa?
Talk to our team before you buy. Go Insurance is leisure travel insurance, and paid work — particularly manual or hazardous work — sits outside what a leisure policy is designed for, so we’d rather set your expectations properly than have you discover it at claim time. Call 1300 819 888 or email sales@goinsurance.com.au with your plans and we’ll tell you straight what’s available. If something does go wrong overseas, contact our 24/7 assistance team on +61 7 3481 9880, and start any claim afterwards through our claims support page.
